Fluid Boundaries Reconstruction Center
Fluid Boundaries Reconstruction Center ®

This work employs a speculative institution as a medium, constructing a hybrid space that traverses biotechnology and contemporary art, exploring the multilayered dialectics of bodily sovereignty and physiological reconstruction in the posthuman era. In this liminal space between clinical practice and artistic speculation, the self-lubricating mechanism triggered by sexual arousal is no longer confined to natural settings. Still, it is transformed into an open system that can be reprogrammed through surgery. Suspended in glass cultivation chambers, new intestinal microbiota from surgically reconstructed digestive systems symbolise the adaptability and plasticity of the body's internal environment. These colonies redefine intestinal functions and reveal the body's potential as a dynamic ecosystem, evoking new perspectives on organ roles and physiological structures. The redesigned lubrication secretion system endows the intestinal system with innovative physiological functions, enabling it to generate self-lubricating fluid in response to sexual arousal. Medical practice transcends traditional functionality, becoming a realm of creative collaboration: surgeons transform into biological interface collaborators, working with patients to design personalised intestinal systems and explore the possibilities of bodily self-definition. Pre-surgical consultations become profound dialogues, encompassing comprehensive discussions from surgical design to fluid functionality. Each participant actively engages, examining and challenging their physiological boundaries, constructing personalised fluid secretion mappings, and redefining their understanding and control of organ functions. The exhibition space resonates with looping surgical advertisement videos and consultation recordings, weaving a tension-filled multisensory soundscape. Each medical instrument, consultation form, and culture dish becomes a medium for questioning, challenging our understanding of bodily ethics and modification boundaries. Through speculative design, the "Fluid Boundaries Reconstruction Center ®" materialises multiple possibilities of future medical practices, both as an experimental field for technology-driven body reconstruction visions and as a reflection of humanity's desire for self-sovereignty. When fluid systems can be redesigned, the work poses an ultimate question: Where do the body's boundaries truly lie?
